چکیده

We present the results of a combined experimental and theoretical investigation of oil droplets sliding on fibres. First, both the axisymmetric shape and the motion of a droplet on a vertical fibre are described. The motion is shown to result from a balance between the droplet weight and the viscous stresses. On a long-term range, the droplet loses some mass through coating the fibre, which decreases its velocity. In a second time, we rationalize the behaviour of a droplet that encounters a junction between vertical and horizontal fibres. Depending on its size, the droplet may cross the junction or remain blocked. The transition is well described by an ordinary differential equation equivalent to a damped harmonic oscillator truncated to the neighbourhood of the horizontal fibre. This simple system is the basic element for more complex fiber networks that would be useful in microfluidic applications involving droplets.

Sliding of water droplets on microstructured hydrophobic surfaces.

Sliding behaviors of liquid droplets on solid surfaces are among the fundamental results of wettability. To remedy the lack of quantitative correlation between sliding angle and roughness of the surface, which is known to be effective at enhancing wettability, we report in this paper the observation that the onset of water droplets sliding under gravity on inclined micropillar-structured hydrop...

Observation and modelling of clamshell droplets on vertical fibres subjected to gravitational and drag forces.

Extensive experimental investigation of the wetting processes of fibre-liquid systems during air filtration (when drag and gravitational forces are acting) has shown many important features, including droplet extension, oscillatory motion, and detachment of drops from fibres as airflow velocity increases, and also movement or flow of droplets along fibres. A detailed experimental study of the p...

A Numerical Model of Droplets Coalescence and Drainage in Fibrous Structures

In this work the model of droplets coalescence in liquid/liquid dispersions in flow through fibrous media is proposed. It is derived for the computation cell being a cubicoid that comprises a single mesh gap and equal volumes upstream and downstream, which size corresponds to a packing factor of the filter media. The numerical approach takes into account deposition of droplets on the fibres as ...

Deformation of a droplet adhering to a solid surface in shear flow: onset of interfacial sliding

In this paper we consider the dynamics of droplets attached to rough or chemically inhomogeneous solid substrates with a circular contact line as they are deformed in subcritical and supercritical simple shear flows. Our main interest is concentrated on identifying the portions of the contact line where the contact angle hysteresis condition is first violated, i.e. the portions of the contact l...

We study the dynamics of liquids drops on a solid substrate [1] employing a long-wave evolution equation for partially wetting liquids of small equilibrium contact angles. After a brief introduction of the modelling of capillarity and wettability in a mesoscopic hydrodynamic theory we focus on the case where lateral driving forces, e.g., gravity for an inclined substrate results in sliding ridg...
